Description
The AQUADIVERSIFY project aims to implement a multitrophic aquaculture system that integrates the production of fish, algae, and sea cucumbers. Currently, this type of production on a commercial scale does not exist in Portugal. By integrating these three trophic levels, the project seeks to enhance economic profitability through the creation of higher value-added products and more efficient processes, while also significantly improving the sustainability of the existing production system managed by the project coordinator, Piscicultura do Vale da Lama.
The primary objective of AQUADIVERSIFY is to develop this innovative production system and enhance the company’s impact by creating new products that can be naturally obtained from production systems in streams. The consortium aims to maximize productivity and achieve greater economic profitability.
Led by Piscicultura do Vale da Lama and in collaboration with CCMAR, GreenCoLab, and Mare-PL, this project is co-financed by the Innovation and Digital Transition Program – COMPETE 2030, as well as the regional programs Centro 2030 and Algarve 2030, and supported by the European Union.
With a duration of three years and a budget of 1.5 million euros, AQUADIVERSIFY also aims to generate new strategic scientific knowledge for the national aquaculture sector.
