Within the framework of the Blue Bioeconomy Pact and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — namely SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) — GreenCoLab, in collaboration with PROALGA, has developed an educational initiative designed to promote blue literacy from an early age.
At the centre of this initiative is the children’s book “The Green of the Blue: Discovering the World of Algae”,  written by Maria de Fátima João, illustrated by Maria Eduarda Mendes and Paulo Evandro Júnior, reviewed by the scientific team of GreenCoLab, and published by Reverso. Through vivid illustrations and accessible storytelling, the book introduces young readers to the fascinating diversity and potential of algae, from microscopic organisms to majestic seaweeds. From aquaculture to bio-based textiles, algae are a powerful ally in the transition toward a more sustainable and circular future.
This initiative is not just a publication, but a broader effort in science communication. The intention is to make the book available in schools and libraries across Portugal and feature it in national literary fairs and public events. Complementary educational activities are also being planned throughout the year, aiming to strengthen ocean literacy and spark curiosity about marine ecosystems and the blue bioeconomy.
