The Industrial Biotechnology Algal Bank’s (IBAB) main function is the strain bank deposit and a backup, ready-to-go plan for the company’s algae production. Its primary focus is to facilitate and improve rapid production and scale-up processes, reducing the typical restart time for an industrial production reactor from 2-3 months to just one week.

In addition to securing these strains, the biobank harbours the research for Strain Improvement, Algae Bioprocesses and Contaminants internal working groups and services. Since its inception, the biobank has safeguarded over 80 strains from different companies and generated more than 200 improved strains. On the way, IBAB has been a key factor on several research projects and networks.

Operation

Each culture is maintained in several growth conditions, from cryopreservation, letargic growth on solid an liquid medium on lower temperatures to small bubbling reactors on optimal light and medium conditions. Ensuring the industrial availability for scaling up.
