“The Green of the Blue”
Welcome to the place where imagination and curiosity are cultivated in the fun world of algae.
“The Green of the Blue:
Discovering the World of Algae”
As part of the Blue Bioeconomy Pact, the GreenCoLab team, in partnership with PROALGA, embarked on a mission to write and illustrate an educational children’s book entitled “O Verde do Azul: À Descoberta das Algas” (The Green of Blue: Discovering Algae), which introduces readers to the fascinating world of algae, both micro and macro. From fish feed to fabric production, the applications are surprising!

Where creativity meets learning
When you think of algae, what comes to mind? Aquatic plants that get stuck in your hair? The stuff that wraps around sushi? Fish food? Actually, it’s all of that… and much more.
And we are here to teach!
Based on the fascinating adventure of a group of four little friends who discover the wonders that these floating beings make possible, we have created an imaginary world of educational and fun activities for the little ones!
Promoting Blue Literacy
from an Early Age
The book was first presented to the public at the ICAB International Congress on Algal Biotechnology. Featuring Liliana Martins Silva, from the Coordinating Office of the School Libraries Network (Ministry of Education), the session aimed to bring the colorful world of algae into classrooms and inspire students’ imaginations.
This project was financially supported by the “Blue Bioeconomy Pact” (Project No. C644915664-00000026) under WP5 Vertical Algae, funded by the Next Generation EU European Fund and the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), under the incentive line “Agendas for Business Innovation” through the C5 financing scheme – Capitalization and Business Innovation. The initiative is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – namely SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) – and was done in collaboration with PROALGA, to develop educational resources to promote blue literacy from an early age.
