Lais Speranza, leader of GreenCoLab’s Sustainability WG, participated in Atlantic Wild Wisdom, a gathering that, from 10 to 12 October, transformed the Baleeira Memmo Hotel (Sagres) into a space for sharing between chefs, scientists, artists and the community, with a central focus: seaweed as food, an ecological resource and cultural inspiration.

Atlantic Wild Wisdom invited the community to immerse themselves in the world of seaweed as food, artistic inspiration and a resource for the future. Over three days, participants explored the biodiversity and culture of the Sagres coast through ancestral practices, contemporary innovation and scientific knowledge.

The event programme included discovery tours at low tide, creative cooking sessions with chefs such as Yuda Abitbol, guided dives, artistic experiences and tasting sessions. The Ocean Talks dedicated to the ocean, moderated by Joana Duarte, from Rota das Algas, also responsible for organising the event, created a privileged space for dialogue on ecology, gastronomy, culture and future opportunities.

In addition to Lais Speranza, other notable guests included Leonel Pereira, Associate Professor at the University of Coimbra and specialist in marine biodiversity; João N. Franco, marine biologist with research focused on the conservation and restoration of kelp forests; Hawaiian chef Yuda Abitbol, who combines foraging and contemporary gastronomy; and Elsa Florêncio, specialist in cyanotype.

More than just an event, Atlantic Wild Wisdom established itself as a ritual of connection between Portugal and the world, between the ocean and the table, between science and traditional knowledge. A celebration of flavours, ideas and deep connections with nature, designed to inspire new ways of seeing, cooking and experiencing the sea.
