On the afternoon of 22 October, the 6th Citrus Fruit Campaign Review took place at the Grande Real Santa Eulália Hotel in Albufeira, jointly organised by AlgarOrange – Association of Citrus Fruit Operators of the Algarve and the National Fruit and Vegetable Operational and Technological Centre, Competence Centre (COTHN-CC).

As part of the 6th Citrus Fruit Campaign Review, held in conjunction with the 3rd Citrus Fruit Adiafa , GreenCoLab attended the Scientific Session to present innovative contributions from microalgae biotechnology to agriculture. The event, organised by Algaorange and COTHN, brought together producers, researchers, and industry stakeholders to analyse the results of the 2024/2025 campaign and discuss key issues such as water management, technological innovation, and the internationalisation of Algarve PGI Citrus Fruits.

During the session, Luísa Coelho, GreenCoLab’s Biostimulants and Biopesticides Specialist, participated as a speaker in the Scientific Space on the topic of “Composting citrus waste”. These composting study results integrated the application of microalgae, developed as part of the ALGAVALOR project.

The application of microalgae thus emerges as an innovative solution to support agricultural practices aligned with current environmental challenges, including the reduction of chemical fertilisers and the efficient use of natural resources.
Funded by the Portugal 2020 programme, ALGAVALOR brings together 21 co-promoters, including universities, research centres and companies. The consortium aims to accelerate the development and application of microalgae-based solutions in sectors such as agriculture, food, cosmetics, animal nutrition and bioenergy — reinforcing the role of these biotechnologies in the transition to a greener economy.

The event also featured debates on sustainable water management, technological transformation in the sector and strengthening the Algarve PGI Citrus Fruits brand in international markets. In addition to the technical component, Adiafa dos Citrinos celebrated another successful production season, highlighting the joint work between producers, associations and scientific entities.
