Description
GreenFerm aims to transform the sustainability of microalgae production by optimising heterotrophic cultivation systems. Its core objective is to significantly reduce both the environmental footprint and production costs of microalgal biomass through the implementation of a circular and resource-efficient production model.
The project is structured around a three-pronged strategy: (i) the integration of low-cost agri-food by-products as alternative carbon sources; (ii) the deployment of advanced energy efficiency measures; and (iii) the valorisation of CO₂ streams through their reintegration into the production process.
Through this integrated approach, GreenFerm seeks to generate high-value biomass with enhanced nutritional profiles, particularly enriched in proteins and β-glucans. To achieve this, the consortium will optimise fermenter operating conditions, increase overall process productivity, and perform a comprehensive sustainability assessment, including Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and techno-economic evaluation.
