From 4 to 9 May 2025, the prestigious 25th International Seaweed Symposium (ISS) took place in Victoria, British Columbia (Canada), one of the world’s leading events dedicated to research and innovation in algae. This year, the conference focused on valuing the deep ancestral connection between indigenous peoples and seaweed, while paying tribute to the research pioneers who paved the way for the technological advances that continue to shape the future of blue biotechnology today.

In her presentation, ‘Screening of Farmed Atlantic Nori Strains: Unlocking Their Full Potential for High-Value Applications,’ Madalena shared the results of her PhD work and the Algae Vertical (SP1b) project, which focused on the selection of Porphyra strains cultivated by ALGAplus. This research aims to enhance the potential of these Atlantic macroalgae for high-value applications in blue biotechnology.

Representing GreenCoLab, the scientific rigor and practical relevance of Madalena’s work earned her 3rd place in the Max Dotty Awards, a distinction that recognises exceptional contributions in the field of applied psychology.

This project results from collaboration between ALGAplus, the University of Aveiro and GreenCoLab, and is financially supported by the Algae Vertical project, within PBA. The results presented reflect the joint effort of a multidisciplinary research team.
