The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) took place this year from 10 to 21 November 2025 in Belém, Pará, Brazil. In this strategic setting, GreenCoLab played an active role in the III Forum for Debates on Algae, held at Embrapa’s AgriZone.
During the event, GreenCoLab had the honour of opening two international panels dedicated to ocean-based solutions, highlighting the role of algae in the transition to a more sustainable economy. The meeting brought together experts, representatives from the productive sector, public policymakers and organisations committed to advancing the blue bioeconomy, promoting a rich, multidisciplinary and future-oriented dialogue.
The opening session featured remarks by Silvia Massruhá, President of Embrapa, and Wilson Nigri, founder of AgroSea, who highlighted the importance of scientific knowledge and international cooperation in driving sustainable transition.
Representing GreenCoLab on the panels were:
– Lais Galileu Speranza, Leader of the Sustainability WG, who presented a reflection on the role of algae in sustainability, reinforcing the urgency of circular approaches, the potential for competitive expansion in the sector, and the importance of strategic collaborations;
– Daniel Mendonça Silva, Business & Dissemination Manager, highlighted GreenCoLab’s role as an applied knowledge transfer hub, emphasising the development of intellectual property, innovative prototypes, B2B services that support the algae value chain, and scientific dissemination initiatives for society.
The debates were led by Roberto Rodrigues (former Minister of Agriculture of Brazil and Professor Emeritus at the Getulio Vargas Foundation) and Cácia Pimentel (Mackenzie Presbyterian Institute), who promoted dialogue between academia, industry, public policy, and entrepreneurial initiatives within the bioeconomy.
Participants included representatives from institutions such as Proalga Brasil, UFSJ, ABIOVE, OceanPact, Sebrae/RJ, Stellantis, among other experts who contributed to a rich and multidisciplinary discussion.
At the end of the event, all participants, visitors and new partners received a copy of the illustrated children’s book ‘O Verde do Azul’ (The Green of Blue), a GreenCoLab initiative that seeks to bring young people closer to science, ocean literacy and the fascinating world of algae.
GreenCoLab expresses its profound gratitude to AgroSea for the opportunity and honour to represent Portugal in this crucial space for global dialogue. This participation takes on even greater significance because it occurs in the Amazon, an emblematic and decisive territory for the future of the planet, often called the lungs of the world, where the impacts of climate change are evident and urgent.
