On 27 and 28 November 2025, the University of Algarve in Faro hosted the CIMAR-LA National Aquaculture Meeting (ENAQUA25). This day-and-a-half event brought together researchers, master’s and doctoral students, industry representatives and associations linked to the aquaculture sector. The objective was clear: to share knowledge, promote partnerships and discuss the future of sustainable aquaculture in Portugal.

The Animal Nutrition team was among the participants, led by Ana Teresa Gonçalves,  accompanied by researchers Maria João Xavier and Rute Félix, who presented their scientific posters. Their contributions aroused significant interest among those present, mainly because of their innovative approaches using microalgae. PhD student Rafael Vitorino presented his research on the immunity of European sea bass, adding scientific value to the event and reinforcing the interdisciplinary nature of the areas under discussion.

The presentations included:

  • Tetraselmis chui cryptids: unearthing their hidden potential for aquaculture”Rafael Vitorino. A study that reveals the still largely unexplored potential of Tetraselmis chui cryptids as promising biotechnological tools for aquaculture applications (Algae Vertical SP5).
  • “Health-promoting potential of Chlorella sp. co-cultures on European seabass gut mucosa” Maria João Xavier. An exploratory approach to the positive impact of Chlorella co-cultures on the well-being of seabass intestinal mucosa (REALM project).
  • “Screening seaweeds from fish ponds as natural functional ingredients for European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) health”Rute Félix. Work dedicated to the identification and valorisation of macroalgae from aquaculture nurseries as potential natural ingredients to promote the health of sea bass (AQUADIVERSIFY project).

ENAQUA25 has established itself as a leading forum for the scientific development of aquaculture in Portugal, creating an inclusive meeting place where researchers, students and professionals in the sector can share knowledge, discuss challenges and build new opportunities for collaboration. The programme included plenary lectures by renowned experts, oral and poster sessions, flash talks dedicated to new ideas, and a session focused on the link between industry and science.
