GreenCoLab showcased its commitment to ocean literacy and sustainable food education at the 11th Sea Teachers Conference, held May 8–9 at Lisbon’s Pavilion of Knowledge.  Organised by the Lisbon Science Centre for the educational community, the event highlighted shared efforts to inspire a new generation of ocean stewards.

Throughout the event, GreenCoLab’s Food and Nutrition WG led four interactive workshops on the use of algae in human food, providing approximately 80 elementary and secondary school teachers with practical, scientific experience focused on the potential of macro- and microalgae in future food systems.

Also inspired by the content of the children’s book “The Green of the Blue – Discover the Algae,” the workshops allowed participants to explore different food applications of algae, understand their nutritional benefits, and learn about real-world examples of their use in sustainable food products.

During the sessions, teachers had the opportunity to interact directly with various algal species and participate in hands-on activities that brought science into the classroom, encouraging new pedagogical approaches related to sustainability, food, and the ocean.

The enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the participants highlighted the growing interest in integrating topics related to blue biotechnology and sustainable food into educational contexts, contributing to greater awareness among future generations regarding environmental and food challenges.

GreenCoLab also thanks its partners, ALGAplus Production and Trading of Seaweed and Derived Products S.A.Allmicroalgae, and PhytoBloom – Microalgae by Necton, for supplying the algal biomass used during the workshops, thereby enabling an experience closely linked to real-world industrial applications.

Special thanks go to the Centro Ciência Viva in Lisbon for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to teacher training and the dissemination of scientific knowledge about algae, food, and sustainability.
