ASSOCIAÇÃO OCEANO VERDE – LABORATÓRIO COLABORATIVO PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO DE TECNOLOGIAS E PRODUTOS VERDES DO OCEANO (hereinafter referred to as GreenCoLAB) opens a recruitment and selection competition for 1 position/vacancy for Life Cycle Analysis Specialist (M/F), for citizens of any nationality including stateless persons under an uncertain term contract under the scope of application ALG-05-3559-FSE-000010, called Hiring Highly Qualified Human Resources, under Application Opening Notice n.º ALG-59-2018-28, financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Social Security Budget (OSS), through the Algarve Regional Operational Program.

Vacancy purpose:

Development of life cycle analysis methodologies for bioprocesses in algal biotechnology to achieve the objectives of Workpackages 2, 3 and 4, as set out in the GreenCoLAB R&D Agenda (WP2 – Development and Maintenance of Biological Resources, WP3 – Biomass characterization and downstream processing and WP4 – New products and services).

Tasks:

  • Collection of data from different algal bioprocesses, in terms of production and processing at laboratory, pilot and industrial scales;
  • Develop life cycle analysis methodologies and models to assess the environmental, social and economic sustainability of algae bioprocesses;
  • Assess and determine the strengths and weaknesses of algae production and biomass processing of the different companies associated to GreenCoLab;
  • Development of a universal life cycle analysis model for the algae production and processing industry.

Profile required:

  • Master or PhD in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, biological engineering, or related fields;
  • Experience in life cycle analysis methodologies for algae bioprocesses and processing;
  • Experience with life cycle analysis software (eg OpenLCA, GABI, SimaPro);

Other Preferred Requirements:

  • Be strongly motivated, demonstrate autonomy and the ability to propose new approaches.

Starting Date

The contract is scheduled to start in January 2021 and will only last for the period necessary to implement the proposed work plan.

Workplace

Work schedule

35 hours a week.

Monthly Compensation

Remuneration will be awarded based on proven experience.

Evaluation and Selection Process

The evaluation is carried out in two stages.

Stage One: Curriculum Evaluation

The selection of the admitted candidates is made through the evaluation of the motivation letter that will indicate the most relevant activities, career development plan and the curriculum vitae that will include the candidate’s scientific and professional career.

Stage Two: Interview

If the jury deems it necessary for the evaluation, the best ranked candidates for the curriculum evaluation will proceed to the second phase, which will consist of an individual interview, either in person or via videoconference.

Multi-omics studies in algae, for the valorisation of micro and macro algae to achieve the objectives of Workpackages 3 and 4, as set out in the GreenCoLAB R&D Agenda (WP3 – Biomass characterization and downstream processing and WP4 – New products and services).

  • Study of the characterization of the lipid, protein and sugar profiles of selected extracts of macro and microalgae (lipidomics, proteomics and glycomics)
  • Preparation and characterization of algae extracts for different biotechnological applications
  • Identification of bioactive compounds in algae extracts
  • Preparation of project reports and writing of scientific manuscripts.

Profile required:

  • Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, or related fields
  • Experience in liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS)
  • Experience in gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • Experience in multi-omics approaches (lipidomic, proteomic and / or glycomic)
  • Experience in biochemical characterization of micro- and / or macroalgae;
