As with annual calendar events, GreenCoLab was once again present at AlgaEurope 2025, one of the most important European events dedicated to the algae sector. The conference took place at the Radisson Blu Latvija Conference & Spa Hotel in Riga (Latvia) from 9 to 12 December. It was organised by the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA), bringing together researchers, companies and decision-makers from across Europe.
With a delegation of more than 15 members, GreenCoLab brought science, innovation and a great desire to share knowledge to Riga. Throughout the event, we contributed with 4 oral presentations and 12 scientific posters, giving visibility to the work developed in various European and national projects and reinforcing our commitment to sustainable solutions based on micro- and macroalgae.
The main objective of the participation was to build bridges between research and industry, promoting dialogue, collaboration and knowledge transfer throughout the entire algae value chain.
The topics presented reflected this practical and impact-oriented approach:
-
- Ana Teresa Gonçalves , leader of the Animal Nutrition WG , opened GreenCoLab’s participation with the presentation “Filling the gaps in fish nutraceuticals with algae”, where she highlighted the potential of algae in functional nutrition for aquaculture (Algae Vertical).
- Rafael Vitorino , PhD student, presented “Targeted biorefineries: The future of functional nutrition in aquaculture”.
- Sofia Navalho, PhD student , shared a life cycle analysis, “Life Cycle Assessment of two industrial Limnospira platensis (Spirulina) production pipelines”.
- Mariam Kholany, leader of the Biorefinery WG, presented “Towards simplified and scalable microalgal biorefineries” as part of the REALM algae project.
These contributions are part of projects such as Algae Vertical, REALM Project, LOCALITY, Algae4IBD, GIANT LEAPS, Aqua4All, COSEC, and Aquadiversify, highlighting the diversity and ambition of GreenCoLab’s work.
In addition to science, we brought to AlgaEurope a set of innovative solutions and prototypes, designed to respond to current challenges in the sector: the illustrated children’s book “The Green of the Blue”, the CIANÈ Blue vegan chocolate concept, Clean Culture prototypes for detecting biological contaminants in algae cultures, a 3D model of fish epithelium for ex vivo testing, and a diverse range of biorefined functional extracts from micro- and macroalgae.
One of the most relaxed and certainly most delicious moments was the “Algae Happy Hour”, where we challenged participants to taste our new food concept: vegan white chocolate with organic spirulina, developed by GreenCoLab’s Food Nutrition Working Group.
The event ended with a special source of pride: Kricelle Deamici received the Audience Award in the scientific poster session for her work ‘Protein extraction and functional properties of Tetraselmis sp. processed by high-pressure homogenisation’, developed as part of the LOCALITY Algae project. This recognition reflects the quality, dedication and impact of the research carried out by our team.
