On 27 September, GreenCoLab took part in another edition of the Rota das Algas in Azenha do Mar, Odemira. Laís Speranza, leader of GreenCoLab’s Sustainability Working Group, represented the organisation at an event dedicated to discovering macroalgae and promoting their use, bringing science closer to the community.
Led by Joana Duarte, a marine biologist and chef, the “Rota das Algas” promotes knowledge of and the sustainable use of these resources, combining environmental education, gastronomy, and a connection to the local area. This edition formed part of the “Porto de Pesca” program, which supports fishing communities and promotes the sharing of knowledge amongst fishermen, chefs, researchers, and participants.
Through a hands-on session involving the discovery and harvesting of macroalgae, participants learned how to collect this resource whilst respecting ecosystems and explored ways of using it in cooking. The event also included a seaweed-based lunch with the local fishing community, reinforcing the link between marine resources, gastronomy and the traditional knowledge of Azenha do Mar.
During her presentation, Laís Speranza outlined GreenCoLab’s work and the role of sustainability in algae research and development within the Blue Bioeconomy. She also highlighted the importance of transferring knowledge from laboratories to industry and society, demonstrating how research can lead to new applications and contribute to a more responsible use of resources.
GreenCoLab also brought along some products and educational resources, including the book The Green of the Blue — Discovering the World oh Algae”, which aroused particular interest amongst the younger visitors. Through its stories and illustrations, the book invites children to discover the diversity of algae, its importance to the environment, and its presence in everyday life.
