GreenCoLab took part in the International Conference on Algae Sustainability 2026, held in Nanchang, China, from 24 to 26 July 2026, with two oral presentations focusing on the comprehensive utilisation of algal biomass and the sustainability of microalgal protein production.
Hugo Pereira, GreenCoLab’s general coordinator, presented the paper “Advancing the algae sector: the ALGAEREFINE biorefinery platform for high-value ingredients”, in which he outlined the ALGAEREFINE biorefinery platform. The approach integrates multiple processing stages to maximise biomass utilisation and accelerate the development of high- and medium-value ingredients for sectors such as cosmetics, the pharmaceutical industry, human food, and animal feed.
Lais Galileu Speranza, Leader of the Sustainability WG, presented “Sustainability assessment of microalgae protein production: Approaches and challenges at the GIANT LEAPS project”. Her presentation addressed the opportunities and challenges associated with assessing the environmental sustainability of microalgae-based protein production, within the framework of the European GIANT LEAPS project.
The conference also featured Alexandre Rodrigues, from PhytoBloom – Microalgae by Necton, a partner of GreenCoLab. In his presentation “Process Constraints and Scalable Engineering Strategies for Large-Scale Outdoor Microalgae”, he shared results from the Vertical Algas project and discussed engineering strategies to scale up microalgae production in outdoor systems.
Organised by Elsevier and Nanchang University, the event brought together researchers, experts and industry representatives, promoting knowledge sharing and creating new opportunities for international collaboration.
Through the knowledge shared, new perspectives gained and potential future partners met, this participation paved the way for new opportunities to drive innovation in the algae sector.
